Community Energy Sharing Trial

What financial incentives are on offer?

Kit Installation

Those opting into the scheme will receive a one-off £25 participation incentive following installation of the monitoring equipment, and £25 at the end of the trial for continued engagement throughout. There will be no cost to the participants for installation of the kit or the kit itself.

App Download and Continued Usage

For downloading the app a one-off incentive of £25 is available and £5 per month for regular checking of the app, reporting issues and regular active usage.

In addition, incentives will also be paid for continued usage of the app to change behaviour according to availability and/or requirement up to £10 per month throughout the trial:

Flex Model

Performance-based rewards will be offered to participants who successfully shift their energy use in response to signals from the project. Payment will be varied depending on response but will start at £1 per kWh flexed

Participants will receive financial incentives structured around a loss aversion model, which leverages psychological drivers to encourage engagement. Participants are motivated to respond to demand events by the prospect of rewards that they may forfeit if they do not actively participate, making the offer more compelling and behaviourally effective.

For Community Energy Sharing through transactive local energy trades, the project will simulate energy sharing within the community to model its benefits, challenges, and potential impacts. The findings will inform the development of the CDSO model and support evidence-based engagement with regulators to influence future policy and market design.

Community Pot

The trial will test the concept of a Community Pot, where successful participation earns a reward for the participant and a shared community fund, creating a dual incentive to shift energy use. The pot is funded through matched contributions (for every £1 awarded to a participant, £1 goes into the community fund). At the end of the trial, participants will propose and vote on how the fund is spent, with the sole condition that it supports low-carbon living.
